Dr. Nicholas J. Smith-Sebasto

Dr. Nicholas Smith-Sebasto is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Studies at Montclair State University. His research interests concern ecological sustainability, particularly food residuals composting and Earth sheltering architecture, psychological constructs related to environmentally responsible behaviors, and evaluating the education efficacy of a variety of environmental education initiatives.
Dr. Smith-Sebasto recently established a food residuals composting program at Montclair State where he has been processing on average about 350 lbs. per day since early September. His teaching interests include numerous courses that deal with environmental topics. Prior to assuming his duties on the parent campus, Dr. Smith-Sebasto served as one of the directors of the New Jersey School of Conservation, a division of the College of Science and Mathematics at Montclair State, from September 2000 until August 2006. Prior to that position, he was a faculty member in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for seven years.
Dr. Smith-Sebasto earned his B.S. in biology from Trenton State College, his M.S. in fishery and wildlife biology from Colorado State University, and his Ph.D. in environmental communication, education, and interpretation from The Ohio State University. He serves on the editorial board of several academic journals and periodicals.
