Hackensack Riverkeeper
Founded by Captain Bill Sheehan in 1997 at the request of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc. (HRI) is the citizen-steward of the Hackensack River watershed.
The mission of Hackensack Riverkeeper is to provide representation for the natural living resources of the river and its watershed through environmental education, advocacy, action and enforcement. We work to protect those resources and preserve the quality of life for watershed residents. HRI advocates for the restoration and conservation of marine and other wildlife habitats within the watershed and promotes sustainable Smart Growth principles. HRI also works for the remediation of ecological damage caused by pollution and sprawl, seeking solutions that are both sound and practical.
Finally, we work with government authorities to help ensure that their decisions address the health of the river and hold them responsible when they don't. Ultimately Hackensack Riverkeeper strives to secure a swimmable, fishable and livable future for the Hackensack River.
